RIP Andre Leon Talley, at your new offices, you know millions around the world love you. Andre Leon Talley, icon, inspiration, leader, brought fashion to an unprecedented new definition, introducing the fashion world to his own unbiased interpretations. He surpassed being a fashion icon in the seventies as the rare equalizer bringing together class, color, and a unique aesthetic. Robin Givhan of the Washington Post on Andre Leon Tally in life "barreled through the gilded doors of a world that was populated by European aristocrats, ivory-skinned socialites, limousine liberals, and snobs. He rose through the ranks due to his intelligence and savvy, as well as his unrelenting belief in the glories and glamour of fashion." He brought glory to the unknown artist as strongly as the establishment. His talent of smoothly, seamlessly, making the unknown an important part of the well-known makes him truly the Hemingway of fashion. We presented our art pieces as wearable celebrations, to Andre Leon Talley, Accessories Editor at WWD, a Fairchild Publication in the East Village in 1976. He immediately welcomed us into his vision, paving the way for Mercura by premiering an original series of our work in articles in and the cover of the WWD Accessories Section. Over a decade later, in 1987 we met with Andre Leon Talley again, in an elevator, in Soho, on our way to Giorgio di Sant Angelo's most celebrated runway show. He greeted us warmly as if time had never passed, supportive of our work with Giorgio. While Creative Director and later Editor at Large of the US Vogue our Art to Wear pieces were featured. Andre Leon Talley's position in world history stretches into the politics he supported. Being an influential part of Andy Warhol's Factory in the early seventies led him into another ingenious outside inside fashion. Leaving the 1970's fashion scene and WWD Accessories Editor post he rocketed into the fashion and art social scene in Paris as both a model and an influencer, then returned to New York City as powerful Vogue energy in the whole puzzle of our reality as a formidable connection between artists and fashion. His legacy as a trailblazer will last forever.
