Mercura NYC Press Release January 2021 edited by Claudia Kitchen

Mercura NYC The works of art by sisters Merrilee Cohen and Rachel Cohen are futuristic and visionary. Offered under the “Mercura NYC” label, they are made for people who are not afraid to stand out from the crowd. To quote their mother Bess Cohen, "Mercura Sunglasses surround the eyes with light and beauty." Those who have donned the Mercura NYC marquee include artists, writers, filmmakers, and icons such as Billy Porter, Lady Gaga, Elton John, Rita Ora, Madonna, Iggy Azalea, Cher, Grace Jones, Taylor Swift, Ivana Trump, Miley Cyrus, David Bowie, Barbra Streisand, Drew Barrymore, Tyra Banks, Brittany Howard, and Iris Apfel, to name a few. Mercura NYC's artwork eyewear is made of everything that is beautiful: crystal, brass, hemp, macaroni, sculpted dripping resins, pearl, cabochon, and more. The two sisters have their roots in harmony between natural and manmade paradigms, mystery, imagination, theatre, architecture, and poetry between sound, touch, light, shadow, and image until barriers melt to translate into wearable art. The work of the siblings is shown and offered in domestic and international galleries and museum shops. Mercura NYC is world-famous on the catwalk for accessorizing award-winning designers such as Giorgio di Sant' Angelo, Oscar de la Renta, Mary McFadden, Giulietta, Lela Rose, Adrian Alicea, Pink Magnolia Mx, Oriett Domenech, Adrienne Vittadini, Hanae Mori, Falguni & Shane, Blue Marine, and Vivienne Westwood. Their eyewear is styled with the works of super runway couture masters in magazines such as Vogue, Elle, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and Cosmopolitan. Club runways and art shows in New York City featuring Mercura have excited the NYC public crowds and reached thousands of clubsters watching their art in Chelsea, Gramercy, and Soho. Mercura has been seen in slide shows at the Roxy, on stage live with couturier fashion such as Valentino on dancers at the Limelight, in accessories-only live shows sharing the stage with famous jewelry designers at the Palladium, in a fashion show at The World celebrating their appearance at FIT Galleries with Gottex bathing suits exhibited in SPLASH, in a Cat Club dancers show preceding a live private Billy Idol performance before a star-studded crowd, on Taylor Mead on stage at the Mudd Club, and solo on the walls exhibit attended by local star artists, such as Will Barnett, Allen Hirsch, and Richard Bernstein at the National Arts Club NYC. Merrilee and Rachel grew up children of the art world on the rural edge of the west coast of Canada with an eye view of Mt. St Helen and near the beaches of Semiahmoo Bay. The sisters were born to two artists who bought and restored antique objects, paintings, rare stamps, pince-nez, and jewelry for their store. As very young children Merrilee and Rachel were trained in cleaning, selecting, and repairing antique objects, threading crystal necklaces and charms, and observing the eccentric and fantastic items of the world. During this time innovative artists such as Couturier Charles James were becoming famous and part of fashion history. The Cohen Sisters were guided to innovative styles by familial instinct. Their grandfather, Max Cohen, a London tailor, created couturier suits for people such as Cary Grant. Their mother's fondest memory of her Cardiff childhood home is a larger than life living room portrait of her father by his paternal first cousin Barrel Rochmal Lichtenstein. Barrel painted portraits of local Cardiff celebrities, politicians, and authors to be grander than life and inspired the mother of the Cohen sisters to become an artist. The sisters were to follow in these footsteps by making art, marrying and becoming moms amidst their careers, and creating a fabulous sensation as Mercura NYC. Merrilee and Rachel combined their different educational backgrounds from the Fashion Institute of Technology, University of British Columbia Fine Arts and School of Architecture, Bezalel Academy, and the Art Students League. Mercura NYC began in the mid-1970s at the Hotel Chelsea in New York with jewelry, headdress, metal clothes, bustiers, and glasses for the stronger crowd. These two women are adventurers, fearless, and possessed with a fine aesthetic eye. As said by Derek Warburton, the sisters are "The Picassos of Sunglasses and Fashion". Mercura continues to apply their incredible background, create new experiences in art, and follow their passion to go on new creative journeys. After decades, they still surround the world with inspired unique beauty. Edited by Claudia Kitchen https://lnkd.in/d4qWtrw
